Who Needs iOS 4.2? Run Android 2.2 On Your iPhone 2G, 3G Now

I saw this over on Engadget and couldn’t resist commenting on it.

It seems that iPhone hacks have way too much time on their hands, because with an application called Bootlace 2.1 for jailbroken iPhone 2G (the original iPhone) and iPhone 3G, the job of getting Android 2.2 installed is even easier.

So who cares if Apple is stopped releasing iOS updates for the original iPhone?  Now we can run Google Android 2.2 and we don’t even need to sync to a computer to load it up.

You can find the installation directions over on FSM.com.

Apple Posts Mac OS X 10.6.5 Update

Earlier today, Apple has released the fifth update to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.  Some of the enhancements that have been baked into Mac OS X 10.6.5 include:

    • Improves reliability with Microsoft Exchange servers
    • Addresses performance of some image-processing operations in iPhoto and Aperture
    • Addresses stability and performance of graphics applications and games
    • Resolves a delay between print jobs
    • Addresses a printing issue for some HP printers connected to an AirPort Extreme
    • Resolves an issue when dragging contacts from Address Book to iCal
    • Addresses an issue in which dragging an item from a stack causes the Dock to not automatically hide
    • Improves Bluetooth pairing with Magic Trackpad
    • Add SSL support for transferring files with iDisk
    • Resolves an issue syncing Address Book with Google
    • Improves reliability of Ethernet connections

However, the real reason you will want to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.5 is to plug the holes in Adobe’s Flash Player.  If you follow the security breadcrumbs, you will end up at the Security Update 2010-007 page which reads:

    Flash Player plug-in

Impact: Multiple vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player plug-in

Description: Multiple issues exist in the Adobe Flash Player plug-in, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution. The issues are addressed by updating the Flash Player plug-in to version 10.1.102.64. Further information is available via the Adobe web site at http://www.adobe.com/support/security/

To be fair to Adobe, Apple also plugged nine holes in their QuickTime software.

The 517MB update is available now via the Software Update control panel.  You can read the full list of fixes and enhancements in Mac OS X 10.6.5 on the Apple Support website.

T-Mobile To Sell Black iPhone/iPod/iPad Cable

Despite all the shenanigans caused by a recent post at TMoNews.com about T-Mobile selling Apple’s iPhone 4G, does anyone else think that a black Apple sync/charge cable is cool?  A white cable looks good with a white iPod or with the mythical white iPhone 4G.  But a white cable with a black iPod Classic, iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad just doesn’t seem right.

The T-Mobile cable is intended for European T-Mobile customers who are traveling State side and is expected to sell for $14.99.  (In Germany, T-Mobile is a non-exclusive carrier of the iPhone.)  I can’t say that if I happened pass a T-Mobile store that has this cable that I won’t pick one up.

The bottom line: So far, AT&T is still the only game in town for an iPhone.  Verizon has all but been confirmed to start selling the iPhone 4G in early 2011.  No word at this time if T-Mobile or Sprint will ever end up ironing out a deal with Apple to sell the iPhone.

Apple: White iPhone Delayed Until Spring, 2011

Apple has announced, sort of, via a company spokesperson, that the elusive white iPhone 4 won’t appear until the spring of 2011.

John Paczkowski, of the Digital Daily blog, contacted the iPhone maker and received the following word:

“We’re sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone yet again, but we’ve decided to delay its release until this spring.”

I suspect that the changes of us seeing a white iPhone 4 on AT&T or Verizon are right up there with seeing a white unicorn nibbling on your front lawn when you wake up tomorrow morning.  Rather, I suspect, as some other have commented, there may not be a white iPhone 4 at all, and that Apple may have quietly decided to wait until the iPhone 5 is announced to begin shipping a new white iPhone.

In the mean time, comedy sketch group JLE has posted the following YouTube video.  Recoded in a style that emulates one of Apple’s promotional videos, this skit had me laughing out loud, clapping my hands, and stomping my feet.

    MotionApps Halts Sales of Classic, Turns Source Over to Palm [UPDATED}

[Editor’s Note: We have been contacted by MotionApps to let us know they are not closing down the company.]

MotionApps, the developer behind Classic, the Palm OS emulation layer for HP webOS 1.x devices like the Pre and Pixi, has halted sales and turned over the source code and the intellectual property (IP) over to HP’s Palm unit.

MotionApps has posted the following note to the Palm user community on their blog:

“We are sad to announce that Palm has removed Classic’s ROM from the new webOS 2.0 device ROM which will result in Classic not working if utilized with Palm’s new webOS 2.0.
This is contrary to our agreement with Palm and was done without our approval or consent. Based on this action, MotionApps will immediately stop selling Classic. However, as a courtesy to our clients, we will continue to support existing Classic customers on webOS 1.x for the immediate future.
Be that as it may, we believe in PalmOS and we want to do what we can to help Palm succeed in their future endeavors. So we decided to hand over the entire Classic source code and all of our accompanying IP to Palm so that Palm can do what they want to do with Classic and make it available with webOS 2.0.
Palm now has all the pieces to manage and control Classic’s future.
Thank you all who supported us along the way and who love PalmOS the way we do.
    MotionApps Team”
A similar message appears on the MotionApps main website that simply reads:
“With the release of Palm webOS™ 2.0 MotionApps will no longer sell or support future versions of Classic.
We have decided to hand the entire source code and all accompanying IP over to Palm so Palm can assume full control of Classic’s future life and shape.
We had great time building Classic and supporting its vibrant community. Palm’s way of supporting MotionApps has become too disruptive for us and we no longer believe that we are in a position to provide our customers with the best product and service.
Our work is who we are so we respectfully choose to exit.”
So it appears that MotionApps, as a company, closing down along the decision to halt sales of Classic as a third-party application.
As a Classic owner, I’m sorry to see it go, however, I have received little or no utility out of Classic recently.  This is mostly to do with the fact that I am no longer using Palm OS apps on my original Sprint Pre.  I’m willing to bet that HP thinks that most of their customers will be in the same boat as me or, simply, they may just want to the cord with Palm OS.  Either way, it doesn’t matter, what’s done is done.
The interesting thing that will happen sooner or later is that all of us who purchased Classic for $30 will be forced to HP webOS 2.0 when is gets pushed out as an over-the-air update to our Pre and Pixi smarphones once our wireless carriers certify the new software.  What remains to be seen is whether or not a customer can decline the receipt of a major HP webOS upgrade like 2.0 and continuing using webOS 1.x and Classic.

    Update:

MotionApps has contacted informed me they are not closing down, but, rather, simply halting the sale and further development of Classic.

“MotionApps, as a company, is not closing down along the decision to halt sales of Classic as a third-party application.

We are simply shutting down Classic as a product only to focus on other products and services that we are working on, some of which are public and some of which are yet to be released in the future.”

I’m glad to hear that MotionApps is staying in the software game and look forward to their new projects.
