Microsoft Wants Windows Phone to Get “Moody”

This sounds perfect!  It would go wonderfully with my moody eleven year old daughter.  (Except it’s not an iPhone.)

    From BGR.com…

“Now we know why Windows Phones come in so many different colors. Techworld Australia reports that Microsoft Research Asia has been working on technology that gives your smartphone the ability to detect your mood and post it on your social networks in real-time.”

Outlook RT Will Arrive Later This Year

The well connected Microsoft blogger Mary Jo Foley has an update on how the software company is trying to sweeten the appeal of the Windows RT operating system – releasing Outlook RT.  Outlook RT will ship with Windows “Blue” (aka Windows 8.1) which is rumored to ship late this summer (read: September).

“Microsoft will make available as part of its upcoming Windows 8.1 “Blue” release of Windows client the rumored Outlook 2013 RT mail client, company officials confirmed on June 5.”

This information was confirmed by Tami Reller, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer of Windows according to Foley’s ZDNet report.

But here’s the interesting thing about Outlook RT, if the report is accurate, it won’t replace Windows Mail client.  Sounds a bit nuts, no?  Given the opportunity to use Outlook or the basic featured bundled email client, I’d pick Outlook all day long.  But then again, I can’t seem to pick an email client for personal use (web-based or native code on my Mac or PC) that I like and use consistently.

Rumor: Google Now Coming to iOS

Take this with a grain of salt, because I’m putting this in the ‘rumor’ category, but…if a supposedly ‘leaked’ video is real, Google’s next assault on the iOS ecosystem will be the up until now Android exclusive Google Now digital assistant.

“Google Now, an Android-only app that aims to provide users with “the right information, at just the right time”, is coming to iOS, if a leaked video is to be believed. Google reportedly posted this promotional video to YouTube accidentally.”

As you might imagine, the Google video was quickly pulled from YouTube, but you can watch the video below.

Rumor: New iPhone Models Coming In August

It seems that rumors and hushed whispers are always going on these days about future Apple products and I’ve become more skeptical of them as time goes on.
That said, I do catch myself getting a little excited about news of the next iPhone, rumored to be the ‘iPhone 5S’.
The latest rumor de jure is that the iPhone 5S will be going on sale in August, 2013.  That is not as late in the year as October, when my iPhone 4S went on sale, and later than June when older models went on sale.  It’s also later than some of the rumors that put the launch date in late May or early June.
As with most of these rumors, they come from somewhere deep in Apple’s supply chain and come to us via websites that we can’t read without running it through Google’s translators, so take all of this with a grain of salt.
In addition to the iPhone 5S, the rumor also goes on to say that the often rumored in expensive iPhone designed for ’emerging markets’ will also begin shipping with a body made out of polycarbonate – the same material Apple’s retired white MacBooks were made out of.

Rumor: Apple Working on Less Expensive iPhone Model

According to an article that appeared in today’s Wall Street Journal, Apple is rumored to be working on a lower cost version of their popular iPhone smartphone.

“Apple is working on a lower-end iPhone, according to people briefed on the matter, a big shift in corporate strategy as its supremacy in smartphones has slipped” reports the Journal.

We’ve heard rumors of cheaper iPhones before along side rumors of an “iPhone mini”, however, it seems that this time around, Apple is taking a closer look at finally selling a high and low-end iPhone.  Up until now, Apple has favored keeping around the previous two years models as their less expensive purchasing options.

Here in the United States, customers typically purchase wireless carrier subsidized phones.  That means, that the newest iPhone, the iPhone 5, starts at $199, last year’s iPhone 4S is $99, and the two-year old iPhone 4 is now free.  These prices all require that you purchase a 2-year service agreement.  If you chose to purchase an iPhone without a service contract, a 16GB iPhone 5 will cost you $649,  a 16GB iPhone 4S will cost you $549, and an 8GB iPhone 4 can be had for the low-low price of $450.  Not exactly “cost effective.”

Now, factor in that in many other countries, wireless carriers do not subsidize the purchase cost of smartphones.  Customers have to pay the full price up front, but have the option of changing carriers without the hassle of early termination fees and other lock in tactics that U.S. carriers use to keep people tied to their service.  Suddenly those prices look insane for customers to purchase with the current global economic situation.

Making matters worse for Apple, Samsung has had an amazing year selling their Galaxy-line of smartphones in China and emerging markets.  At the end of 2012, Samsung was estimated to have about 31% of the worldwide smartphone market compared to Apple’s 14.6%.  To put a finer point on it; the iPhone generates about 48% of Apple’s total annual revenue.  Any perceived slowing or decline in Apple’s global share is likely to send investors running for cover.

So, what might we expect from Apple should they decide to go to market with new version of the iPhone that will be less expense?  The Journal has this to say:

“Apple has been considering a less-expensive iPhone since at least 2009, viewing it as a way to grab market share and introduce people to the brand, said people familiar with the efforts.

Before the launch of the iPhone 4 in mid-2010, the company developed designs for cheaper phones that were very similar to the iPhone at the time but had a less expensive back and sides, one of the people said.”

    Editorial: iPhone 5 “Scuffgate”, Really?

    Via BGR.com
Ok, I think that this is a bit much.  The iPhone 5 was released this past Friday and customers are already getting their pitchforks out for “Scuffgate”.
What is scuffgate?  That is this year’s “major design flaw” after the iPhone 4’s “antennagate.”
Oh my God!  Yes, if you take a sharp object and start scraping it on the back of your iPhone 5, yes, it’s going to get scratched!  Duh!
Yes, the anodized aluminum coating is going to wear off over the normal use life of the iPhone 5 if you chose to use it without a case.  That’s to be expected.  Don’t like your gear getting banged up, knocked around, or nicked?  Put it in a case.
Shove your caseless iPhone in your jeans pocket with your lose change, rings, or car keys? Yup, it’ll get scratched up.
You took a sharp metal object, say a Liquidmetal SIM card tray pin, and rubbed the sharp end on the back of your new black iPhone 5 you say?  Yup, it’s going to get scratched up!  What were you expecting would happen?
Come on people, the iPad is “magical,” not the iPhone.  The iPhone 5 also doesn’t have a “molecular bonded shell” like KITT had in the 1980’s TV show, “Knight Rider.”
People who are opening up the box an taking their iPhone out for the first time and finding scratches and nicks in the metal casing, yes, those people have legitimate complaints.  People taking sharp objects to the unprotected metal plating don’t.
    Via AppleInsider.com
Ok, lets try to put this in perspective.  You go out and buy a new car.  Are you going to take the keys and rub them, sharp side to the paint, down the side of your new car?  No!  Why not? Because it will scratch the paint! So, no, of course you’re not going to do that.  And if you did, you can’t go running back to the deal and demand a refund.  They know you did it.  Same thing applies here.
To be fair, I’m not defending Apple.  If they are shipping out iPhone 5 handsets that have paint chips, nicks, or other types of scratches or defects in the paint or metal band around the phone, they should be fixing it.  Me?  I’m a use it in a case kind of guy, because, honestly, I don’t like my gear getting all scratched up.  To get the iPhone 5 you had to either sign a 2-year contract with your wireless provider or shelled out $300+ to get the phone off contract so you really need to take care of the hardware.
Let’s lighten up on the gear, ok, folks?  This stuff isn’t indestructible.

Rumor: First Fully Assembled iPhone 5?

The Verge is running an article with some photos from iLab Factory that reports to show what the fully assembled next generation iPhone from Apple could look like.

We are assuming that the next generation iPhone will be called ‘iPhone 5’.  We expected last year’s iPhone, the ‘4S’ to be the ‘5’, however, once we found out that the next iPhone would ‘evolutionary’ rather than ‘revolutionary’, well, we all knew that the ‘next next’ iPhone would be the iPhone 5.

So here it is, the latest rumor de jour: the iPhone 5.  I really like the form factor of the iPhone 4/4S/5 over the previous generation iPhones.  I also like the idea of the aluminum back plate as I’ll be much less worried about breaking it.  I’m even OK with the taller unit to accommodate a 4-inch screen.  I’m just not a fan of the two tone color scheme; black with a brushed metal.  I think I’d like to continue to see the iPhone back places all white or all black.

Rumor: 5th Generation iPod nano to be a Cross Between iPod touch and Previous iPod Nano

The rumor mill is showing equal amounts of love for the iPhone, iPad, and now the iPod.

Japanese language blog, Macotakara, has a conceptual rendering of what the a fifth generation iPod nano might look like.  The rumor suggests that the new design is a blending of previous iPod nano designs (the skinny, tall variety, not the boring square designs) and the iPod touch.
Not too bad.  I’d buy one.  But I’ve always liked the tall iPod nano designs.
