VersaMail Update for Palm Centro

According to the Palm company blog, a new VersaMail client update has been made available for Centro customers.

The latest update, VersaMail 4.0.7, adds enhancements to VersaMail’s support for IMAP compatibility with Google’s Gmail service. Palm has also rolled in an update for customers who use automatic data synchronization with Microsoft’s Direct Push technology when using the Exchange ActiveSync feature in VersaMail.

VersaMail can be downloaded directly to a Centro over the air (OTA) by tapping the following URL:

This update is intended only for the Palm Centro, and will not work on other Palm OS devices, including, the Treo 755p, 700p, or 680.

You can read the upgrade directions on the Palm website.

some users of 755p in Treocentral have successfully installed this on their phones via the SD card route. FYI 🙂

The Centro is the only Palm OS device that comes pre-installed with VersaMail 4.0.I suspect, and I’m guessing here, that Palm is stating that VersaMail 4.0.1 is for the Centro only is for call center support. If the update was made available for the the 700p and 755p, Palm would have to undertake the cost of re-training all of the support staff both at Palm’s own call centers in addition to the people working at the wireless carrier’s support centers and retail locations. All that costs money that Palm needs to spend on Palm OS II/Nova.Power-users are going to get the software on their devices anyway, and those people won’t likely call the support centers anyway. So I’m willing to keep quite about the whole thing and enjoy the upgrade.Alan G

How you get back to an earlier version of VersaMail depends on whether or not you planned for problems. If you used a backup application like NVBackup, Resco Backup, or Backup Man, all you need to do is to restore your backup to the Treo and soft reset. If you just applied the update after a HotSync and have not yet performed a new HotSync, then hard reset your device and HotSync to reload your data.If you have no backup and you have performed a HotSync after installing VersaMail 4.0.1, then you’ll want to rename your Backup folder (found in your HotSync profile folder) and then hard reset the Palm and HotSync. When you do, your PIM data will be restored, but not your applications. At this point, you will need to manually reinstall your third-party applications, including VersaMail if you have a Verizon Treo, and go from there.Alan G

I tried installing the VM4.07 update on my 700p and it seemed to install ok, however after reseting it is in an endless reset loop now. Of course like a moron I didn’t do a backup beforehand (but did after booting into ‘safemode’, but it is still horked after restoring from that after a hard reset).
